Biostimulators 101: Understanding Sculptra and Radiesse

As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen, elastin, and volume, leading to fine lines,  sagging, hollowing, and changes in skin texture. While traditional dermal fillers provide immediate volume, biostimulators work differently. These treatments help your body  rebuild its own collagen over time for natural and long-lasting rejuvenation.

At Therahaus Wellness Med Spa, two of our favorite collagen-stimulating treatments are  Sculptra and Radiesse. While both are considered biostimulators, they each have  unique benefits and ideal treatment areas.

What are Biostimulators

Biostimulators are injectable treatments designed to stimulate your body’s natural  collagen production. Instead of simply “filling” an area, they encourage gradual tissue  regeneration and skin strengthening over time.

Collagen is one of the key proteins responsible for skin firmness, elasticity, and youthful  structure. Starting in our mid-20s, collagen production declines by about 1% each year.  In our 30s & 40s, the collagen loss becomes visibly apparent, and fine lines appear,  skin becomes thinner, and the skin doesn’t bounce back as quickly. In the first five  years after menopause, women can lose up to 30% of their skin’s collagen due to falling  estrogen levels.

Biostimulators help restore:

• Skin firmness and elasticity

• Facial structure and support

• Volume loss

• Crepey or thinning skin

• Overall skin quality and texture

The result is a more natural, refreshed appearance that develops gradually.

What is Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable biostimulator made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). The PLLA  microparticles act as a structural scaffold beneath the skin, triggering a mild, controlled  healing response that recruits fibroblasts to rebuild your skin’s deep foundation. Rather  than creating instant volume, Sculptra works gradually over several weeks to months as  your body produces new collagen. Results appear subtly and naturally, making it a  favorite for patients wanting long-term rejuvenation without looking “overdone.”

Best Uses for Sculptra

• Full-face collagen restoration

• Hollow cheeks or temples

• Jawline support

• Skin laxity

• Overall facial rejuvenation

• Body treatments such as hip dips buttock enhancement

Benefits of Sculptra

• Natural-looking results

• Gradual improvement over time

• Long-lasting collagen stimulation

• Can improve skin texture and firmness

• Results may last 2+ years with maintenance

Sculptra is often ideal for patients experiencing generalized volume loss or wanting a  more subtle, regenerative approach to aging.

What is Radiesse

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA)-based injectable. The CaHa particles act  like a scaffold that stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin while the gel  carrier gives an immediate filler effect. It can also be diluted into “hyperdilute Radiesse,”  which is commonly used to improve skin quality and firmness in larger treatment areas.

Best Uses for Radiesse

• Jawline contouring

• Chin enhancement

• Hands

• Neck and chest rejuvenation

• Crepey skin

• Lower face support

• Hyperdilute treatments for skin tightening

Benefits of Radiesse

• Immediate visible improvement

• Stimulates natural collagen production

• Excellent structural support

• Great for contouring and definition

• Improves skin texture and elasticity over time

Radiesse is especially popular for patients wanting more immediate correction while still  benefiting from collagen stimulation.

Sculptra vs Radiesse: What’s the Difference?

Although both treatments stimulate collagen, the way they work - and the results they  provide - are slightly different.

Sculptra

• Gradual collagen stimulation

• No immediate volumizing effect

• Softer, subtle rejuvenation

• Best for global facial volume loss

• Results develop over several months

• Longer-lasting regenerative effects

Radiesse

• Immediate volume plus collagen stimulation

• More structural support and definition

• Excellent for contouring

• Often used in jawline, chin, hands, and neck

• Results visible immediately with continued improvement

Which Biostimulator is Right for You?

The best treatment depends on your goals, anatomy, and areas of concern. Some  patients benefit more from the gradual, full-face rejuvenation of Sculptra, while others  prefer the immediate contouring and support of Radiesse. In many cases, the two  treatments can even complement each other.

At Therahaus Wellness Med Spa, we create personalized treatment plans based on  your individual needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, we’ll discuss: • Your areas of concern

• Desired level of correction

• Timeline for results

• Skin quality and collagen loss

• Long-term maintenance goals

• Your budget

The Future of Aesthetic Medicine is Regenerative

Biostimulators are becoming increasingly popular because they focus on restoring and  rebuilding rather than simply filling. By stimulating your body’s own collagen production,  treatments like Sculptra and Radiesse help create natural and refreshed results that  continue to improve over time.
